John H. Haines M.D.
Dr. John Haines is literally loved by his patients. This is no exaggeration. Whether it is his easy-going demeanor, personable interaction style or deeply engaging nature, Dr. Haines makes patients feel as though he’s known them for years (and for so many of them he has!). In fact, he’s just as comfortable having his patients and colleagues call him by his first name than “Dr. Haines”. In addition to his long experience as one of the area’s most experienced ophthalmologists and being at the forefront of technological advances in eye care, Dr. Haines’ authenticity enables patients to have a deep bond of trust in him, which is easily the most important aspect with patient/doctor relations.
As a Board Certified Ophthalmologist Dr. Haines holds positions as Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center and is a Clinical Instructor at the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland.
He is an expert in LASIK refractive surgery, no-stitch cataract surgery and lens implantation. He also specializes in plastic surgery of the eyelids, treatment of glaucoma, geriatric eye care, and diabetic diseases of the eye.
Dr. Haines is dedicated to continuing medical education and often speaks at conferences on such topics as ocular genetics, refractive surgery, and neuro-ophthalmology. Dr. Haines has published numerous papers in ophthalmology journals and other health journals.
Dr. Haines holds a special interest in ophthalmology in developing nations. This comes from witnessing firsthand the desperate need for healthcare in these countries. For the last 24 years, Dr. Haines has conducted annual missions to a variety of countries around the world to perform cataract removal surgeries free of charge, as well as to teach local ophthalmologists the latest techniques in eye care to better serve their citizens. In 2011, Dr. Haines and his wife, Joy, set up the Give Me Sight Foundation to generate additional funding to provide even more cataract removal surgeries.
During 2016’s mission to Myanmar, Dr. Haines and his team were followed by a documentary team. This film revealed the stories of three patients who received care from Dr. Haines and team. This is a moving and inspirational story which gives an in-depth look at why the work of Dr. Haines and the Give Me Sight Foundation is so important to restoring quality of life and sense of self-worth to people around the world. We’ve provided that documentary here. Enjoy!
